Dear Mom & Ruth,

Here we are at Mother’s Day 2015 and I wanted to take a little time to write a letter to the 2 of you. You both make my heart swell with pride and honor at the knowledge that we are related. You inspire me, challenge me, encourage me and make me want to strive to be a better version of the me that I was yesterday and the day before. Who knew that this past year we bring us each to such amazing points in our lives…and that we get to share all of these wonderful things side by side.

Mom, you have molded me and shaped me into the person I am today. I may not be the same piece of art you brought into the world, but it is with the brushstrokes of your love that I have learned I am a masterpiece that is worthy of great honor. I wouldn’t know that but for the love that you have showered on me. For the courage that you have shown and the amazing, kick-butt, Texas girl, spit fire attitude that you modeled and instilled in me. Thank you for always having an ear that listens. Thank you for letting me go wild in my excitement over just about everything…and for not letting me get stuck in the moments that scare me to death. Thank you for always being a prayer warrior for me and being the first in the battle line when it comes to standing firm for your child. Thank you for showing me that being a strong woman doesn’t mean being a nasty woman. For showing me that you can have differing opinions from the norm, and you don’t have to beat anyone over the head with those opinions. Thank you for encouraging my creative soul and all of the wild ideas I come up with, even when you know it is probably going to wear me out. And thank you for always reminding me to slow down or take it easy, even if you know I’m not going to listen to you, at least you still say it! Thank you for thinking I am funny and always laughing, even when it is totally inappropriate! Thank you for letting me be a rebel, speaking my mind and saying words that you wouldn’t use, but that allow me to express passion when I can’t find any other way to do so.  May I always remember to bring a part of you with me on the journey, as well as a part of the women who went before us. May I do my best to represent the Strong, Southern Girls of our family!

Ruth, oh girl, you have no idea how you have changed my life. YOU were prayed for from the time PJ was placed in my arms. I prayed that you would be strong, yet soft. Courageous, yet compassionate. That you would see, with eyes that no one else has, the best way to minister to my son. I prayed that you would keep yourself in the midst of becoming one with PJ. That you would always know who you are, even as that changes throughout the years – and the YOU that you are would strengthen and guide your family in the ways only YOU can. I prayed that God would bless you in the middle of the night while feeding babies, or in the middle of the day when toys are everywhere and you are bone weary.  I prayed that, even in the tough times of marriage, you would see God’s hand of blessing as he draws the two of you closer to Him and closer to each other. You married into a feisty family…my prayer for you now is that your heart would always remain tender in the midst of all the sass that occurs within our midst! I pray now that God will begin working in your heart as you walk through life with at least one little boy. Only the mom of a boy understands completely the bond that is created the very moment you laid eyes on his sweet face. I pray that, in the push and pull of your relationship, you continue to lift him to the Lord – as much as you want to pull him in and keep him to yourself.  I’ve said it before, and I will repeat it until I leave this earth, you are the daughter of my heart – born to me through prayers along the years. I could not be more proud of you or feel as though we are more connected than I already do. I love you more than you will ever know and I am blessed beyond measure to call you ‘daughter’.

May the years we have left together as the 3 women of the family be filled with blessings, bondings, prayers, and moments that are unforgettable! Happy Mother’s Day to both of you!

Me!
