This weekend our family here in Tucson got together for lunch at Cracker Barrel (this happens to be one of my daughter in-love’s and my favorite joints to get some good Southern grub). The evening before my son called us all and asked if we wanted to get together. Without going into horrendous detail, my brain went nuts with the possibilities of ‘why’ he was calling us together. The last time we were called to get together for a meal out was when they told us about our future grandchild coming into the world! This time I was convinced they were telling us they were moving away.
I know people have kids move away all the time…my heart would break into a million pieces. So, for 12 hours I ran the full gamut of scenarios and emotions that might come.
All of that worry only to find out, he just wanted to have some family time and that we need to be more intentional about our time together. We are blessed to live so close to one another…and that we all love each other and get along. (please note…if you don’t know me well, you have no clue how my imagination can go wild with stuff like this – and always has. My parents have many stories. Shoot…I can tell you the same stories. I know it’s crazy in my head, and yet – this is part of the miracle that is ME!)
All of that to say this…in the middle of the night, when I was imagining the worst case scenario, I decided we need to have Family Sundays together. Not every Sunday…but regularly. So, after the truth came out at lunch and I could breathe again, I announced Family Soup-er Sundays will begin on the 2nd of November and happen every other week at our house. Unfortunately, the son has to travel that week so he will miss the first one, and maybe the second one, but at least we will get started and begin to establish some new traditions for the Lil’ Man!
I have several ‘go-to’ soup recipes in my bag of tricks to get the ball rolling on Soup-er Sundays. Here are a few:
- Potato, Sausage & Leek
- Taco Soup
- Beef & Vegetable
- Lentil and Ham
- Chicken Noodle
- Chicken Tortilla
- Beef & Barley
- French Onion
Those are my go-to soups (hey, that gets us through the first of the year). However, I want to ask YOU what some of your favorites are? Post your soups/recipes in the comments section below. Every Monday following Soup-er Sunday I will post what soup we had and the recipe. Anyone whose soup we have I will give you credit and mention you in my post!
